HER JAZZ is a music blog by me, Rachel D. Smith. I live in Brooklyn, New York, where I’ve been writing about music on and off since 2011. I grew up in rural Michigan and went to Pomona College in California, where I spent most of my free time working in the music department at KSPC Radio.

From 2007-11 I hosted a radio show called “No Coast of Nebraska,” where I got to do interviews and in-studios with some pretty amazing people including Gina Birch (The Raincoats), Julia Holter, John Dieterich (Deerhoof), High Places, Owen Ashworth (Advance Base, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone), Honus Honus, Screaming Females, Ezra Buchla (Gowns, The Mae Shi), and Ian Svenonius (The Make Up, Chain & the Gang, Nation of Ulysses, etc.) The archives are no longer online, but I’ll try and post transcriptions and/or recordings someday!

If you like what you read here, you can find more of my writing at Dusted Magazine (2011-13, 2016-present) and NPR Music.
